There are 3 different variations of Elleste: Elleste Solo, Elleste Duet and Elleste Duet Conti.
Elleste Solo is an oral medication that contains the active ingredient estradiol hemihydrate. This active ingredient is a naturally occurring form of the sex hormone females produce, oestrogen.
Elleste Duet is a hormone replacement preparation that is taken orally. This medication is available in two different quantities, Duet 1mg and Duet 2 mg tablets. Whichever one has been prescribed, each pack contains two different types of tablets. One type of tablet contains estradiol hemihydrate and the other type contains estradiol hemihydeate in collaboration with norethisterone acetate.
Elleste duet conti is an oral medication that contains two active ingredients, estradiol hemihydrate and norethisterone acetate. These active ingredients are two types of the main female sex hormones, oestrogen and norethisterone. Estradiol hemihydrate is a naturally occurring type of oestrogen and norethisterone acedtate is an artificial form of progesterone.
As you approach the menopause your ovaries will gradually produce fewer hormones. This may cause unpleasant symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, sweating and vaginal irritation and dryness. Elleste HRT works to replace the hormones lost during the menopause. Elleste HRT is also available in different treatments, including Elleste Duet, Elleste Duet Conti and Elleste Solo. Both Elleste Duet and Elleste Solo are also available in different dose tablets, which include Elleste Duet 1mg & 2mg, and Elleste Solo 1mg & 2mg.
Elleste Duet 2mg, and Elleste Solo 2mg, are also recommended as a treatment for both menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis, if other treatments have proved to be ineffective.
This medication works by supplementing the body with hormones that are lost during the menopause. The Solo version of this treatment is an oestrogen only HRT, while Duet and Duet Conti are combined HRTs and contain both oestrogen and progestogen. For women going through the menopause, the hormones in Elleste HRT act as a supplement to replace the low levels of oestrogen that occur during the menopause, while also helping to relieve any distressing symptoms caused by the condition. For women who do have a uterus, progesterone is needed to prohibit the effects of the oestrogen, since excessive amounts of oestrogen could potentially cause cancer of the womb.
Elleste HRTs can be used when you start menopause, which for most women is between 40-60 years of age. However, the Solo version of this medication is an oestrogen-only HRT and therefore not suitable for women who have not had a hysterectomy. If have a uterus a progestogen should be included in the therapy. All Elleste HRT are not suitable if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the therapy medication. If you are pregnant, or think you could be pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history with blood clots, heart attacks or angina, a history of breast or womb cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, problems with liver, porphyria, or have an untreated endometrial hyperplasia, then it is advised that you do not use these HRT medications.
For the treatment of menopausal symptoms, the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration is usually recommended. With all types of this medication, for women who are menstruating, treatment should be taken on the first day of your period. However, if your cycle has ceased or has become infrequent, treatment can begin at any time.
Elleste Duet 1mg and 2mg (cyclical HRT): One oestrogen tablet (estradiol) should be taken daily for the first 16 days followed by a progestogen tablet (estradiol & norethisterone) for the next 12 days with subsequent courses repeated without interval. Duet Conti (continuous HRT): One tablet should be taken daily on a continuous basis if your last menstrual cycle occurred 12 months previously.
In regards to the Solo version 1mg and 2mg (cyclical HRT): One tablet is taken daily on day one of menstruation, with a progestogen included for 12-14 days of each cycle if you have a uterus.
As with most medications Elleste HRTs may cause some side effects, although not every woman will experience them. Side effects may include breast pain, tenderness or enlargement; weight changes; breakthrough bleeding or spotting; changes in sex drive; nausea; abdominal pain or indigestion; vaginal thrush and headaches, among others. More serious side effects, such as gall bladder disease and liver problems, are extremely rare. If you experience any of these symptoms then it is recommended that you seek medical advice immediately.
